Gardening Expert, Tom MacCubbin
Mark Viette received his Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from Virginia Tech in 1980. He then completed an in-depth course in tissue culture of plants under Dr. Murashige at the University of California in Riverside.
In 1981, he joined his parents in a family business, the André Viette Farm & Nursery, which grows over 3,000 varieties of herbaceous perennials for the sun and shade.
Mark lectures throughout the Unites States and contributes many articles to horticultural hournals. He has taught ten different horticulture classes at Blue Ridge Community College. He is president of Viette Communications, which produces and distributes a live national weekly radio call-in program, “In the Garden with Andre Viette” airing on 19 radio stations. Mark the alternate host for the program.
In June, 2010, Mark became the garden host for WOR Radio, NY, succeeding the late Ralph Snodsmith. The popular Sunday morning gardening program, which was renamed “Easy Gardening with Mark Viette”, was syndicated to nearly 130 radio stations across the country on the WOR Radio Network until December, 2012 when the network was sold.
Mark has produced and hosted over 700 60-second video gardening segments which air on broadcast TV. Almost 400 of these video tips (Viette’s Gardening Tips) can be viewed on YouTube. He has also produced a special HD video on “Easy Amaryllis” which was e-mailed to 3.3 million Home Depot Garden Club members.
Mark is host of the Gardening segment of “Down Home Virginia”, which is a four minute garden feature airing on 34 cable systems in Virginia and is also available nationwide on RFD-TV Channel 9409 on the Dish Network. He also hosted “Garden Views” with the Viettes, an hour long gardening call-in show which aired monthly on Virginia public television, WVPT. In addition, Mark shares helpful tips and provides expert advice on gardening in Virginia during his segments of “Viette’s Gardening Tips” which air Monday-Friday on CBS, NBC, and ABC.
He has completed five plant finding trips to Europe and South America where he searched for new and exotic perennials to be introduced to American gardens. On a recent trip to Brazil, Mark filmed video segments on Easy Amaryllis from the production fields of over 14,000,000 bulbs.
